The Frederick Police Department is issuing a new call to the community as they attempt to track down a man wanted for the murder of young father Michael Isaih Olaniyi in July 2022 in the 300 block of North Market Street.
At approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 23, 2022, an officer from the department on patrol in the area heard a shots ring out in the 300 block of North Market Street, and upon arrival, they found Olaniyi, 26, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Olaniyi was treated at the scene and pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the hospital, according to officials.
During the subsequent investigation, detectives identified a Maserati Ghibli with a Virginia license plate that was used by two suspects involved in the murder.
Detectives were able to identify the owner of the luxury vehicle as Benjamin Michael Johnson, and evidence collected by detectives showed Johnson possessing a gun minutes before the homicide occurred, it showed Johnson driving the second suspect, believed to be Hakeem Earnest Sampson, to the victim.
Detectives believe Johnson transported Sampson to the area of O Street in NW Washington DC.
In mid-December, an arrest warrant was issued for Johnson charging him with:
- Accessory after the fact to first-degree murder;
- Accessory after the fact to second-degree murder;
- Possession of handgun on a person;
- Two counts of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
Sampson was described by the police as being 5-foot-5 weighing around 240 pounds. His last known address was in Washington, DC.
Since he has been on the run evading law enforcement, police say that two other suspects have been charged for their roles in the case, with one awaiting trial. Sampson remains at large.
Anyone with information regarding Sampson or his whereabouts has been asked to contact Det. Radtke at the Frederick Police Department by calling (240) 549-4579 or emailing SRadtke@federickmdpolice.org.
